5 Easy Spring Hairstyles That Actually Work (Even in Portland Weather)

If you’ve ever walked out the door in April feeling great about your hair only to check it a few hours later and feel… less great, you know the vibe.

Spring days in Portland have a way of throwing you into weather you just don't expect. It starts out innocent enough, a bit of sunshine peaking through the clouds...the next thing you know? It's hailing. Your curls start to fall (hopefully you made it to the car fast!), but the bangs start doing their own thing and suddenly that slicked-back bun feels like the only hairstyle that can survive the day. And honestly? We love a slick back, it just shouldn’t be your only option.

So here are five spring hairstyles we actually recommend for that “I’ve used dry shampoo one too many times this week” hair stage. They’re quick, realistic, and made for PNW weather that doesn’t always cooperate. If you want low-maintenance styles that work with spring weather instead of fighting it, keep reading.

1. Middle Part + Mini Clips

The easiest way to make second-day hair look styled. This one is simple, but that’s why we keep coming back to it. A clean center part instantly makes hair feel fresher. The mini clips keep the front controlled without flattening everything at the crown.

How to Create It

  1. Start with dry hair. Second-day texture is honestly ideal.

  2. Use the tail of a comb to draw a clean middle part back to the crown.

  3. Smooth the front pieces lightly with a comb. Skip the heavy brushing, texture is great!

  4. Place a small clip on each side about one to two inches back from the hairline.

  5. If the top feels flat, gently loosen it with your fingertips and add a bit of hairspray to tame flyaways. Texture spray is also a great addition!

It takes maybe three minutes. It looks like you tried. Et voila! She's cute <3

2. The Elevated Half-Up

When your roots need help but the rest still looks good. We do this constantly in the salon when our hair is just needing a bit of polish. It gives shape at the crown without committing to a full restyle.

How to Create It

  1. Section off the top third of your hair from temple to temple.

  2. Gather that section loosely and secure it with a small elastic.

  3. Make a hole in the middle of the ponytail section and use it to flip the ponytail through.

  4. Now secure with a clip for extra volume or pull from either side to tighten the ponytail.

  5. Leave the ends natural, or touch up a few pieces if they need it.

This is especially good for longer layers that fall flat in damp weather.

3. The Kylie Jenner Twisted Slick-Back

We all saw it at the Grammy's this year and felt the inspo. This is the style we reach for when someone wants to look a little more put together and is down to try something that feels fresh. It looks intimidating, but we promise it's easy to do!

How to Create It

1. Make your part where you normally wear it.

2. Start with slightly damp or lightly styled hair. A small amount of gel, styling cream, or smoothing product helps keep everything sleek without getting crunchy.

3. Take a small section of hair near each temple, twist it backward once or twice, and pin it near the crown of your head. Use bobby pins that match your hair color and cross them in an “X” if you need extra hold.

4. On each side, grab a section of hair just above your ear up to the twist you already pinned. Gently comb and guide that hair back away from your face, then secure it into the pinned twist.

5. Lightly loosen the style with your fingers so it feels soft and lived-in instead of tight.

This works on straight, wavy, or lightly refreshed curly hair. If you have flyaways, smooth a tiny bit of product over the surface instead of adding more spray. Finish with a light mist of hairspray for PNW humidity.

4. The Bandana Is Back

Bandanas aren’t just a throwback — they’re one of the most versatile styling accessories you can use right now. They are such a great styling tool for hiding grown-out roots, calming crown frizz, and making third- or fourth-day hair look intentionally styled instead of overdue for a wash. Depending on how you wear it, it can feel practical, polished, or a little witchy and effortlessly mysterious in the best way.

How to Wear It

1. Start with dry, natural texture.

2. Fold the bandana into a triangle for a classic wear or fold into a 2 inch section for more of a headband look.

3. Place the long straight edge along your hairline with the point of the triangle facing the back of your head OR fold it into a strip for more of a headband look.

4. Tie the two ends of the bandana together underneath your hair at the nape of your neck.

5. Pull a few face-framing pieces loose if you want it softer and more lived-in.

This is especially helpful on windy mornings when you want something that stays put but still feels intentional.

5. Second-Day Hair As A Headband

Second-day hair doesn’t have to mean starting over. This sleek, simple style is made for low-effort mornings when you want something polished and intentional without spending a lot of time in the mirror. It’s a great option for days when you want your hair to feel put together while still keeping that effortless, everyday vibe.

How to Create It

1. Start by separating out all the hair in front of your ears on both sides.

2. Pick up the rest of the hair from the back and crown and clip or hold it up and out of the way.

3. Take the front sections you separated, pull them underneath the back section of hair, and secure them together with a small elastic.

4. Let the top section of hair fall back down over the elastic so it stays hidden.

5. Smooth the surface lightly so the finish looks sleek and intentional without feeling stiff.

This is a low-effort, put-together style for windy mornings in Portland.

What Makes It Work?!

Low-maintenance styling is really about finding little ways to make your hair feel put together without spending a lot of time working against it. Whether it’s a twisted slicked-back detail, a bandana moment, or a simple second-day sleek style, the best looks are the ones that fit into your real life — not just the ones that look good for one photo.

If your hair just isn’t working for you, even when you’re trying to style it, it might not be a product or styling problem. Spring is a great time to think about refreshing your cut, adding soft dimension to your color, or building layers and face-framing pieces that fall naturally instead of needing constant adjustment.

Low-maintenance hair isn’t about doing less. It’s about setting your hair up so it works with you instead of asking you to fight it every morning.

If your spring hair feels like it’s never quite cooperating, it might be time to rebuild the foundation — and that’s something the team at Moonstone Salon would love to help with!
